National Cyber Security Awareness Week
9 June 2010
This week is National Cyber Security Awareness Week, an Australian Government initiative to raise awareness of smart online practices.
CUA urges all its customers to adopt simple online practices to help improve their online security.
General Manager for Risk and Compliance, Royden Juriansz said awareness and vigilance are the keys to online security.
“CUA is committed to raising the awareness of the online security risks and the steps our customers can take to protect themselves when online,” he said.
“There’s a large array of devices that now connect to the internet so it isn’t just about protecting yourself online when you’re on the computer.
“Increasingly homes today are connected using wireless systems which need to be secured with strong passwords to prevent unauthorised access.”
Mr Juriansz said as the number of people using online devices increases, the need for better cyber security becomes increasingly important.
“No matter how or where you go online, you need to protect yourself,” he said.
“Australians need to follow some simple steps to ensure they are protected online – regardless of what device they are accessing the internet through.”
Six steps to improve online security:
- Install security software and update it regularly.
- Turn on automatic updates so that all your software receives the latest fixes.
- Get a stronger password and change it at least twice a year.
- Stop and think before you click on links or attachments.
- Stop and think before you share any personal or financial information about yourself, your friends or family.
- Know what your children are doing online. Make sure they know how to stay safe and encourage them to report anything suspicious.
